NRG Energy and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration have partnered together to build a commercial-scale carbon capture system that captures 90% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the processed flue gas from an existing unit at the WA Parish power plant in Fort Bend County, southwest of Houston. Through Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), the captured CO2 will create a revenue stream by increasing domestic oil production at the West Ranch oilfield, jointly owned with Hilcorp Energy Company. EOR is expected to boost oil production at the field from around 500 barrels per day to an average of 15,000 barrels per day for more than decade, peaking at 30,000 barrels per day. Construction has begun and in late 2016, when the project is complete, it is expected to be the world’s largest post-combustion carbon capture facility on an existing coal plant. Our speaker, David Greeson leads Petra Nova's development program for the carbon capture business line, including the project at NRG's WA Parish plant. Since joining NRG six years ago, he led the development and construction of a combined cycle unit near Houston and for the last four years he has guided the establishment of NRG’s carbon capture business. Prior to joining NRG, David spent 26 years in the electric utility and independent power industry in Houston, developing power plants in California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Rhode Island, and Illinois.
